Teen Representation

How are teens represented in the media?

Teens are often misrepresented in the media. Teenagers are presented as over dramatic, emotional, immature, and who don't make the best decisions. Especially in movies and countless TV shows, I see teens partying every weekend and going out. For example in the TV show Gossip Girl, teens are seen going out all the time attending high fashion events.

Not all teens are like that. Some are extremely cautious of what they do and know the consequences and how it will affect their future. The media almost never shows the side where teens are busy studying for the upcoming math test, SAT's or college applications.

Yes, teens are often expressed as rebellious individuals but they usually have a reason behind it, whether it be because of their pasts or some sort of catalyst that slowly caused them to act out. Adults are never involved in the characters lives. They almost seem nonexistent and let the teens do what they want. Let bring the TV show Gossip Girl again. The characters always seem to be in a pickle with adult-like situations, making adult-like decisions.

Society looks at teens negatively. All society see is sex, drugs and alcohol. People who are very emotional and are unable to make decisions for themselves. What society doesn't see are those teens who need to grow up quickly and take on the world, one obstacle at a time. The media needs to start portraying those teens who are studying everyday for a higher education and see those teens who reach for the stars.
